War on Two Fronts
- The US had a two front war with the Germans on the Europe side and the Pacific side with Japan
- The US wanted to defeat Germany first, because it was decided that they posed a much bigger threat than Japan did at the time.
Battle of the Atlantic
The Germans used sonar ships and planes with radars to locate and attack other ships and equipment.
- New technology used were the sonar ships and planes to quickly detect enemies. The sonar ships lets out sound waves to bonce back to measure the distance of something, or someone. The radar is able to detect things in the air and down below.
North African Campaign
- Both Erwin Rommel and Bernard Montgomery were field marshals. Erwin held the nickname "Desert Fox" and was German, and Bernard "Monty" was British.
- The Allies won in North African so quickly because they were able to quickly surround the Germans.
Active Defense in the Pacific
- The battle of the Coral Sea started on May 4th to May 8th, 1942. The battle was an attempt to stop the US from getting stronger. During the battle something new came into use, which was aircraft carriers.
- The battle of the Midway is where the US had hold of strategic islands, and Japan general Yoamamoto wanted the islands so he attacked. However the US caught wind of Japan plans and attacked as well, taking out 4 Japanese carriers and destroying their planes. This resulted in Japans biggest war loss.
- The battle of the Guadalcanal started an operation called "Shoestring", which is were over 20,000 marines stormed onto a Japanese island trying to claim it for the allies. The battle was s difficult battle for both sides, because there was very few supplies making hand to hand combat more common. Both sides took heavy losses but Japan finally surrendered on February 9th, 1943.
